Frequently Asked Questions

I have an emergency!

Don’t panic! Call 000 or go to the emergency department nearest to you.  Sydney Perinatal Doctors are not an emergency service.

What services do you offer?

Pre-Conception Checks - If you are wanting to plan a pregnancy, we can help make sure you (and your partner) are ready to do so. If you are struggling to achieve pregnancy, we can help you investigate the causes, and refer you on for fertility assistance as required.

Antenatal Consults - We can offer Antenatal Shared Care at RPA, Canterbury, RHW, Ryde, RNSH, Westmead.  We can also offer one-off antenatal consults for your questions or concerns.

Postnatal Consults - We can offer Well Baby “Blue Book Checks” e.g. 1-4 week check, 6 week check, and all the routine and optional childhood vaccines. We can do your 6 week maternal check.  We can help with lactation issues, other feeding questions, sleep and settling.

Please see “Our Services” for more information.

Are you Lactation Consultants?

Dr Angela and Dr Sarah are both GPs with a Special Interest in Lactation Medicine. Both have completed lactation-specific training and are working towards the international board certified lactation consultant qualification.  Both are members of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.

What area do you cover for home visits?

Home visits are currently available with Dr Sarah only. Generally speaking, home visits are available in the Inner West and Ryde areas.

We may occasionally be prepared to go further afield, and this may attract a travel cost.   If in doubt, please send an email enquiry first.

Is your service covered by Medicare?

Private fees are charged for most of our services, although most will also be eligible for a Medicare rebate. You can contact either practice for a more accurate idea of the most up-to-date fees.  If you are signed up for the Medicare Safety Nets, you will receive an even greater rebate after you reach the threshold.

If you do not have Medicare, most of our services will attract a rebate from your private health insurance.

Tell me more about that Medicare Safety Net?

We’re glad you asked!  If your healthcare costs in a calendar year (1 January to 31 December) are over a certain threshold, Medicare will start paying a higher rebate, covering UP TO 80% of your out-of-pocket costs.  What’s the catch? You need to be registered!  You can find out more and register yourself (and/or your partner or whole family) via Medicare.

We recommend you get onto this as soon as possible.

Note that the Medicare Safety Net and the PBS (Pharmaceuticals) Safety Net are not the same thing, and registering for one does not automatically register you for the other.  We suggest you check out both.

Can you give vaccinations?

Yes! Both of our practices are equipped for scheduled and

Will you be my regular GP?

This is up to you. If you have a regular GP elsewhere and wish to see us just for perinatal care, you can give us your regular GP’s details so we can send them updates about your care (with your consent).

Both of our doctors are specialist GPs who can care for your other health needs. You can make an appointment with Dr Angela in Five Dock, or with Dr Sarah in West Ryde

Do I need a referral?

No, you don’t!  Just make an appointment!

How is COVID-19 affecting your services?

If you or your baby have cold or flu symptoms and still really need to see us face-to-face, we will ask for a negative COVID test and that adults wear masks.

Can you be my Antenatal Shared Care (ANSC) Doctor?

Yes, we can! Dr Angela provides ANSC via RPA and Canterbury. Dr Sarah provides ANSC via RPA, Canterbury, RHW, RNSH, Hornsby and Westmead.

Note that shared antenatal care usually requires 5-10 GP visits across the pregnancy. Some of these may be telehealth.

Can you provide scripts, referrals and tests?

Yes, we can provide referrals to specialists, order imaging and pathology tests, and write prescriptions that are relevant to your perinatal care.

Can you help me with contraception?

If you would like to discuss postnatal (or other) contraception, please make an appointment with Dr Angela.

We are currently unable to place Implanons or Mirenas through our service, although watch this space!.

Can you provide a Mental Health Treatment Plan?

A Mental Health Treatment Plan is best written by a patient’s regular GP, however we can write one for perinatal mental health issues where appropriate.

Will you see Dads/partners too?

Yes, we do!

The father-to-be may like a pre-conception health check and related advice.

We are also able to help with lactation induction.
